[vRA 7.5] - Data Collection switch VM's

Hi Team,

 

We have a vRA infrastructure with 4 vCenter Endpoints.

  • 2 vCenter for Production Datacenter.
  • 2 vCenter for DRP Datacenter.

 

VM's in Production datacenter has hostnames like this : LX0001

VM's in DRP datacenter has hostnames like this : LX0001B

 

In the vCAC inventory we see only one vm : LX0001 but after a Data Collection this vm disappear and we can see the vm LX0001B.

 

For vRA Managed in the deployment object the vm change also. Some time the deployment contains LX0001 or LX0001B.

For vRA unManaged Virtual Machine same problem appear.

 

 

what can be corrupted ? vCAC plugIn ?

 

What is the link between vCAC Machine and vCenter VM ?

  • The VM UUID ?
  • The vm hostname ?
  • Or whatever ?

we are in vRA and VRO of version 7.5.(upgraded on Feb-2019). On Jul11, the compatibilty and Vmware versions were upgraded to 11 and 10249 to match the Vcenter version of 6.5.

We use to update our Windows Templates with the lastest patch always (above was the recent change). So when we test the template bu provisioning a VM , this provision Fails in the Add/Extend Disk phse of vRO with the subjected error.

 

Please help me is this something related to the recent changes done in the Vcenter side , or this is a vRA/VRO error. if its the latter , request to give a solution for the same.

trigger a VM reconfigure workflow via Event Subscription before the VM is Powered ON

Hi,

 

I am trying to trigger a VM reconfigure workflow to update VM hardware configuration. This reconfiguration requires the VM to be in powered on state. Now I unable to figure out which event should I trap/subscribe to ensure:

 

  1. The VM is registered
  2. The VM is not yet Powered ON.

 

I am aware that within my existng workflow, I can PowerOff the VM and then execute the reconfigure VM task. I just want to be cleaner and execute the workflow after the VM has registered by yet to PowerOn.

 

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

A long time ago i worked through the process of changing the owner of an XaaS item How to change owner of custom resource . It looks like the process has changed in 7.5. Does anyone have a working method to change the owner of an XaaS provisioned item?

How to get (workaround) vcacProperties in an Event state where vcacProperties are not available

I have a workflow event subscription configured for following state, phase & event:

 

State: CloneWorkflow.CloneMachine

Phase: EVENT

Event: CloneWorkflow.CloneMachine.EVENT.OnCloneMachineComplete

 

Now in there are no vcacProperties available within a vRO workflow during the CloneWorkflow.CloneMachine state.

 

Now I need to access custom property that I have set within the blueprint and I need to consume it within my workflow. The question is what are valid workaround to pass a blueprint property to vRO workflow.

Skip Initial Power On

Hello,

after an Upgrade from vRA 7.1 to 7.4 the BasicVmWorkflow has the new state initalPowerOn. I don't want the machine automatically powering on an tried to trigger a workflow with subscriptions. But neither with output variable workflowNextState  = BuildComplete nor withvirtualMachineEvent = OnCreatingMachineComplete i can skip the initial power on.

The Subscriptios is configured to run the workflow at state PRE and state name BasicVmWorkflow.InitialPowerOn. The Workflow starts about 30 seconds before the machine is powered on.

vRealize Business: How to set favorite time for data collecting from vRA & VC

Hi guys,

 

I know we can set data collecting time intervals by using "configclient.py" in the system shell. But I need to set my favorite time clock for collecting data from vRA and vCenter. Can you give me a clue, please?

BTW, I couldn't find any document or guide around internet for this configclient parameters! For example there is a dc.vc.backdate.days=1 in the configuration which I don't know what it is! Is there anyone to help?

multiple servers

Hi,

 

I have a blueprint which allows the user to create one server.

In this blueprint, when the user requests for a new server, he fills the hostname, ip, domain and submits the request.

 

Is it possible in one deployment to allow the user to add multiple servers according the blueprint I configured?

Custom Properties not being passed in Event Broker payload? [Permissions?]

We recently ran into an issue where custom property values are not getting passed to vRO via the event broker/subscriptions. In our case we have a VM provisioning blueprint with a custom form. It has a few elements (check boxes and text fields) on it that take user input and store the values into custom properties. These properties get passed via the payload to vRO and we take actions on their values.

 

While this has been working great for the our team, once we hand the form off to a non-administrative vRA user to consume, the properties are sent, but the user inputted values are not. Initially I thought there was something wrong with our blueprints so I recreated the blueprint only adding a few raw elements to test the payload. (shown below)

We then have a event subscription to trigger when a VM is successfully provisioned.

 

As I mentioned above, this configuration works great for an administrative user. If a normal user with permissions to simply run the blueprint requests a VM, the properties values are not passed. Here are the log runs which show the payload properties for admin vs non-admin:

The values that do get passed in both log runs are static defined in the custom property definition. The values that are missing are user inputted values.

 

Any idea why we are seeing this behavior? Ideally the properties would get passed even for a standard user.

Not Able see the data stores added in vceneter in vRA 7.4 compute resources

Hello All,

 

   We have recently added couple data stores into SDRS cluster in vcenter, post that I have initiated the data collection from vRA compute resource and data collection is successfully. But not able to see the newly added data stores.

 

   We have total 137 data stores mapped to that cluster, out of which only we could 103 data stores. Id there any limitation or some other issue ??

 

    We are using vRA 7.4, Patch HF11.

vra 7.6 and the fun and games of installing it

Hi

 

 

I have an issue with vra 7.6 and also 7.5 on my setup during installation

I have vcenter 6.7u2

esxi 6.7u2

vra version: 7.6 build 13027280

the iaas server, which I have tried with Win2k12 and up until June 2019 update as well as Win2k16 with latest July 2019 updates applied.

both vra guests are placed in the same network on the same host.

I did the following:

installed sql server (express 2014), installed iis, installed jre (8u211).

I uninstalled and installed msdtc because it can cause issues.

I go through the minimal install, sql and iis is on the same windows 2016 host (with all updates etc.)

I can go through the whole installation wizard and all is well (green the whole way, all validated steps were validated and good).

When I star the installation the first step fails with no connection between va and management agent.

 

 

So while writing this I had a bright idea... or so I thought.

I checked the manager agent status and there are two services.

1: VMwareCAFManagementAgentHost

2: VMwareCAFCommAmqpListener

 

 

These are set to manual, starting them got me past the first two steps. STep three where it checks if all services are running I am back to failed and need to check communication between va and management agent.

It seems other peolpe have had similar problems at step 1 already, I am curious if anybody got it to install and if someone has an idea on how to progress here?

 

 

Again while writing something here... the weird thing continues, I now managed to get to 70%, I notice the 2nd service keeps stopping and when I then start it again and select "retry failed" it continues a bit further.

 

 

In the end I managed to get to end of the installation, surely this can't be the way it's supposed to be though?!

Software component installation fails for remote branch deployment

Currently trying to deploy a server template to a remote (overseas) site.  Deployment works for our primary datacenter location and a remote branch here in the US, but the software installation component is failing when I try to deploy overseas.  I'm open to deploying the software in another manner, if necessary.

 

Software and versions:

-vRA Version: 7.4.0

-vSphere version 6.5

-VM is Windows 2016 Standard

 

Topology:

VRA/vCenter/IaaS server all in a US-based colocation data center.

ESXi cluster in London.

DNS/AD servers at each site.  AD-integrated DNS.  AD replication configured as star topology - US site as primary, with remote sites on 15 minute replication schedule.

 

Process Flow:

-Deploy server from template, with a software component in the blueprint, and some event subscriptions after deployment to configuring monitoring.

-Software component configured in the blueprint - simple CMD script to copy SCCM and McAfee agent installers to a local file location and then execute.

-Error message suggests that this may be a DNS resolution issue:

also the OVERVIEW page of this forum still references itsm 3.0.  will that ever be updated.. its years old at this point.

Issue with VRA 7 Rest API to revert a snapshot

Hi All,

 

Did anyone try managing snapshots like create, revert and delete a snapshot using VRA 7 rest API's.

 

Below is the JSON request paylod, any idea what should the provider-SnapshotReference value should be when i am reverting a snapshot.

i am using a VRA 7 Java sdk for implementing this API call, and this is the error that i get everytime

The snapshot already exists for my VM, this is the response for getCatalogResource call,

Monitoring Cafe virtual appliances using SNMP [vRA 7.6]

The vRealize Automation 7.6 Release Notes state, in part:

 

SNMP service - facilitates the monitoring of the vRA node resources such as CPU, Memory and many other. Configurable to actively monitor resources and send snmp trap when certain threshold is exceeded, API available

 

When I search for "snmp" wrt vRA 7.6 I see references to the vRO plug-in which has been available as far back as 7.4 (Using the SNMP Plug-In ).  Having monitoring of vRA have a dependency on vRO doesn't make sense, especially since my other question would be: is there a way to monitor vRO via SNMP? I was hoping/expecting that the release notes was referring to something that ran within the (Suse) Linux portion of the appliance.

 

1) Does the above statement from the release notes refer to the vRO plugin or something else?

2) Does anyone have experience monitoring vRA+vRO using SNMP? If so, how?

Regular Expressions: must have "su" in field

I am new to Regular Expressions. I am working with vRealize Automation 7.6 and would like to set a constraint on one of the fields to make it mandatory to use the letters "su" at the end of the field. It must match this format: "firstname.lastname.su"

 

How would I write that?

vcac-vami missing ??

Forgive me, I'm a VMware noob. I recently installed vrealize 4.7.1 from the ova and needed to rerun the install wizard. Googled around and found I could do that using /usr/sbin/vcac-vami, or editing /etc/vcac/vami.ini.

 

Logged in as root and found there was no /etc/vcac directory with a vami.ini file.  Nor could I find /usr/sbin/vcac-vami on the whole system. Is it not in the ova?  Does the appliance not have the full tools set? What's the deal?

 

Any idea from the vmware pros?
