Search Text Field Usages

Having a hell of a time finding any docs/blogs/tutorials that show you how to use the search box.

I'd like to use it to query (REST) a server for a list of options to select from. Does anyone have a link they can provide that gives some details on how to use the Search field?

If i drop a search box on the form it asks me about an entity type, which i assume is how it pulls the list?

which does a similar thing for a dropdown, but due to the number of results i'll have (100-200) i figured

Anyone have a blog post similar to the one above but for a Search box?
